DotAsia : The Domain That Launched A Thousand Clicks

02-14-08

img524/6017/dotasiagw6.jpgI’m really excited about this.

The dotAsia (.asia) top level domain is going to be available to all individuals who would like to invest or own a dotAsia domain. The sunrise period has closed last January 31, 2008. The landrush period will commence February 20, 2008. During the sunrise period, companies and trademark owners are allowed to register their trademark domain names to protect them from cyber squatters. This way, trademark owners are given the protection they need provided that they comply with dotAsia’s policies and registration requirements. On the other hand, the landrush phase pertains to the time period when anyone can register a dotAsia domain. Those who wish to grab the opportunity to invest in the most prestigeous and potentially profitable cyber real estate in the Asia can now have that chance.

Now I know how Christoper Columbus, Hernan Cortes, David Livingstone and Lewis and Clark felt. All I can see is a vast potential. You’ll know you struck gold when you hit it. (more…)

Domain Registration Tips : How to Get A Good Domain Name

02-12-08

Domain names have become the most important marketing tool online. Your domain name is more than just your URL or web address. It in itself is a first impression tool, stating what your site is all about. It’s like your business name online. Frankly, I think everybody’s making a big deal out of this - for a good reason.  Your domain is almost equivalent to your identity in your online presence. It’s like giving out your name on your first day in school. It will stick all throughout your cyber existence.

Many web entrepreneurs are even hell bent on getting the "perfect" domain name for their business. Many have spent six-figures (even seven) for just one domain, believing that the particular domain will grant them awesome powers of financial success.

But hold your horses ladies and gents. What exactly is the perfect domain name? Or even a good domain name for that matter? Will this domain name conjure some cyber vacuum and lure all traffic to that site? Or will this domain have the power of Midas’ Touch, turn everything to gold and make the owner the richest person alive? I need help here because I think it is quite "unrealistic" for me to spend 5 million dollars on something I can’t even hold or touch.

Nevertheless, the knowledged people of the web have spoken. I am but a student, a mere interpreter of the modern scribes of cyber philosophies. The tenets say Google rules all and search engines are king. Now I know why.

Here are a few tips I’ve learned while browsing the hundreds (hyperbole) of sites that give out tips on how to register a good domain name.

TIP # 1 : Keep it short and memorable.

Visitors easily remember short and catchy domain names such as "travelguide.ph". Not only does this elicit good name recall but it also tells the visitor what the site is about. People will actually remember and type that into their browser for next time. Make sure to pick a domain that you can easily relay over the phone or can be easily remembered when someone hears it over the radio. (more…)

You Might Be A Domainer If…

01-31-08

I saw an interesting article from this site that talks about domainers. Domainers are people who invest, buy, sell and monetize domain names. Domainers were initially frowned upon by the online community due to certain "ethical" issues. Domainers profit from inexperienced Internet users who type in the words in their web browsers instead of using a search engine. When these visitors click on the ads posted in the site, the domainers earn money. Also, they may sell the domain at a premium to willing buyers that decided on utilizing the domain for their business or personal use. Over time, the image of domainers have pivoted from opportunist to entrepreneur. Domainers do not usually talk about their success in the "industry". That’s probably why domaining has only been recently "accepted" by the general public and the online community as a valid means of web business-making.

“The industry was very secretive for a long time,” said Frank Schilling, an industry pioneer who hit it big with bare-bones Web destinations like drugproblem.com and diamondweddingrings.com. “When you make millions at home in your underwear, you are not telling a soul about it,” he said. (New York Times) Frank Schilling is reported earning 20 million dollars a year from his domains. And he doesn’t even have to take a bath when he goes to work. I think earning 20 million dollars a year not doing anything, save a few clicks here and there has to be the ultimate dream life of any corporate slave stuck in his cubicle until dismissal time. I’d know. It’s my dream too.

The article below tries to comically illustrate domainers and their so-called "way of life".

You Might Be A Domainer If…

… you think .mobi is a whale.

… on your job application you list cybersquatting.

you can recite GoDaddy promo codes from memory.

… you’ve named one of your kids Alexa.

… you think "tasting" has nothing to do with food.

… you’ve appraised your own name.

… your main source of income is Adsense revenue.

… your Sedo rep sends you holiday cards. (more…)

The Anatomy of a Website

01-28-08

We all know what a website is. We all know it’s the pages we see when we surf the Net. But how much do we really know about websites? How many of us really know how these "things" work or even come about to cyber existence? To tell you quite honestly, I did not know of the processes involved prior to my initial interest about websites. I’ve always thought that you just need to register a domain name and put content as you would using Paint or Word. Seriously. Well, this article is to hopefully educate the individuals who, just like me before, knew nothing about the "technical" aspect of websites. Still, this is written in layman’s terms and explained by a noob as well.

Websites are like online abodes. We can put whatever content we want to put in there. We can design it however we want. We can add music, play movies, post your latest poem creations, or even just create a blog that talks about anything under the sun. It is practically your online presence. But before we can do all these things, we need to understand the ways and how we can do these things.  (more…)

Domain Names? Google? Web Hosting? The Internet Explained To A Caveman

01-25-08

img108/6035/cavemanss9.gifIf you have been living under a rock for the last two decades, this article is for you. Sadly, the title contains words that would most probably mean nothing to you. To you these may be just some kind of gibberish kids make up every now and then. Kids like doing that. Kinda like when the hippies back in the 60s made up new words and all. Now, a new set of lingo has emersed. When they say they want to "google" something, you may probably understand it as someone being lazy about something. When they say they want you to "facebook" them, you’d probably end up throwing a phonebook in their face and end up in jail.

To avoid such misfortune and in order to hide the fact that you have been living under a rock for the past 20 years, you must understand the thing that changed humanity as we all know it. And that thing is called The Internet.

What is the Internet? Nobody fully knows what the Internet is. People from all walks of life give their own definitions of this thing and yet, nobody seems to have been able to come up with the jackpot answer. Sociologists call it, the thing that will define the lifestyle of modern man. Some theologians and members of the religious order call it a tool of the devil. Businessmen call it the new primary marketing tool.  I will talk more about how people from different walks of life define the Internet in the upcoming posts. Right now, I should stop digressing and start talking about my main topic. Sorry about that. (more…)

Domains Explained to the Online Noob

01-12-08

What is a domain name?http://www.bethlehemga30620.net/register_domain.jpg
It is the name by which you or your business will be known on the World Wide Web. It must be unique and effective. Domain names are also called "domains" for short. Many refer to domains as the URL

Why do I need a domain?
You need a domain so that people who use the Internet can find your site on the World Wide Web. Even if you don’t have a website up yet, it is often a good idea to register your domain to avoid someone else getting and using the name that you want.

Having your own domain also lets you have a personalized email address, such as your-name@your-domain.ph. A personalized email address is easier to remember and more professional.

What are the advantages of registering a domain?

  • You can use your domain to get an easy-to-remember e-mail address (ex. sales@your-company.ph, or your-first-name@your-last-name.ph).
  • Owning a domain name signals you are in step with new technology, and lends you prestige and credibility. It is essential when you advertise yourself on web.
  • Your company names and brands should be on web as domain names, to advertise them, protect them from competitive attack and avoid unauthorized use.

Who should register a domain name?
Anyone who wants to establish a presence on the Internet should register a domain name. Businesses who have spent time and money building up a brand should also register their brands to prevent unauthorized use.
